Why 500W+ demister pads demand dedicated circuits
A demister heating pad is a resistive load. It draws current continuously when energized. Unlike an LED backlight (typically 8–15W), which is incidental to the mirror's function, the demister heating film is the mirror's primary thermal load. A 500W pad at 230V draws 2.17A. A 600W pad draws 2.6A. On paper, this fits comfortably on a 15A circuit. In practice, it does not.
The problem emerges when the demister runs in parallel with other bathroom loads. A 2000W geyser, a 1200W exhaust fan, and a 500W demister on the same 15A circuit will sum to 3700W. The circuit breaker will open. This is not a defect; it is the breaker doing its job. But the homeowner experiences it as a fault in the mirror.
Bangalore's monsoon humidity (June through September) and Cauvery hard water (TDS 200–300 ppm) make demister pads essential in master baths. The heating film prevents condensation on the mirror surface, maintaining visibility and protecting the silvering from corrosion. This function is non-negotiable on specification. The 20A rule: when to specify a dedicated demister circuit
If the demister pad is rated 500W or higher, specify a dedicated 20A circuit. Do not share it with the geyser, exhaust fan, or any other high-draw load. A 20A breaker allows a sustained load of 16A (80% of rated capacity per IS 2553). A 600W demister at 2.6A consumes 16% of this headroom. This leaves margin for transient inrush and inductive loads on the same branch.
If the demister is rated 300W or lower, a shared 15A circuit is acceptable, provided no other load on that circuit exceeds 1500W. If you specify the mirror late (after the electrical rough-in), the electrician will have already allocated a 15A branch to the bathroom. Changing it to 20A requires re-routing conduit and re-provisioning the distribution board. This is a site change order.

Questions architects ask
Can I put a 600W demister on a 15A circuit if I remove the geyser from the same circuit?
No. A 600W demister draws 2.6A continuously when active. A 15A circuit is rated for 12A sustained load (80% of 15A per IS 2553). While 2.6A is well below this, the circuit must accommodate inrush current when the demister first energizes (typically 1.2× to 1.5× the steady-state current). Additionally, if the exhaust fan or any receptacle load activates simultaneously, the combined draw will exceed 15A. Specify a dedicated 20A circuit for any demister rated 500W or higher.
What if the electrician says the demister can share a 15A circuit with the mirror LED backlight only?
This is acceptable only if the demister is rated 300W or lower and the mirror LED backlight is the only other load on the circuit. A 300W demister draws 1.3A. The mirror LED draws 0.05A. Total: 1.35A. This is 9% of the 15A circuit capacity, leaving ample margin. However, if there is any possibility that the exhaust fan or receptacles will be on the same circuit, specify a 20A dedicated branch. Do not rely on the electrician's judgment; specify it on the RCP.
Does the demister pad need a separate isolation switch?

What happens if the demister trips the breaker on the first humid morning?

Can I use a time-delay (Type 2 or Type D) breaker to prevent nuisance tripping?
A time-delay breaker will reduce nuisance tripping but will not solve an undersized circuit.
